What are the consequences if the United Kingdom leaves the EU?

At the end of January 2020, the United Kingdom entered a transition period, whereby trade between the United Kingdom and the EU will continue until the end of the year 2020 without customs controls or changes to documentation. What will happen after this transitional period has not yet been fully decided, but it seems certain that customs controls will be introduced.
